In the midst of sorrow
Jaq showed a slight dragging of his right hind leg after jumping for a ball Saturday morning.  Around noon we took him to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with a  herniated disk in his middle spine.   By 5 PM he was paralyzed from the lower chest down.  By 6 AM Sunday we had no choice but let our beloved Jaq go.

......................Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
the band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
and somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
but there is no joy in Mudville — since Jaq's joyful light's gone out.

I fear Mudville will forever be without JOY
without my beloved Jaq -

1-23-17 After three months of grieving Jaq I've come to understand I've experienced unconditional love twice -
once with a cat named Katjke and now with a dog named Jaq.

I don't believe unconditional love, between human adults - even love partners - is a healthy process.  And it's not been the norm for me in my pet relationships, of which there have been many.

But when it does occur - it's magical.

The reason it's becoming abundantly clear that pet ownership increases the joy and length of life is because it's incredibly beneficial to feel you are a person of significance in the eyes of something that loves you back unconditionally.

Since I've decided - long before the loss of Jaq, too free myself from the responsibility of pet ownership - I fear it's a loss I'll feel for the rest of my life.  Unless, of course, I change my views and again invest in the daring experiment of searching for unconditional love.

I am beginning to think some of us have been kidding ourselves that we live in societies of basically decent, well-meaning people. In my own little country they have just decided to leave the European Union. The main reason for leaving seems to be to stop foreigners coming to live and work in Britain. Scotland, London, and a few English cities didn't vote for it, but the majority of the country did. And within hours of the result instances of hate crimes sky rocketed. And now Trump is in the White House and already there is this anti-Muslim ban. And millions of Americans voted for it. I really think the liberal (sorry, I know in America that is a dirty word, but in the European sense it just means decent) world we grew up in was just a blip, and now we are getting back to normal. Back to Spain of the 30s, Germany and Russia again of the 30s. Or maybe back to Europe of the 30 years war mentality (1613-48), or the Crusades, or the slave trade. Scary times indeed.

Sorry about Jaq. We've just had a similar loss.

I've changed my country of origin from the :flagus: to unknown as a reaction to what's happening with Trump.  Being gay my whole life I've seen lots of hate - but nothing on this scale   It's like living at the base of an active volcano erupting day after day after day.  All I can hope is the millions of us who voted for him have severe buyer's remorse and are doing all we can to get him and all his cronies out of there ASAP.  And all I can hope is we all finally realize what allowed humans to succeed was co-operation and not violence.

May I ask more about your recent loss or is it too painful just now to go into?

Mem, one of our 2 cats. She was young, and heavily pregnant. One day she seemed very withdrawn and listless and we thought she is about to go into labour. Early in the evening she suddenly screamed, thrashed about very violently and went into spasms. And died. We have no vet in the area, but asking about we realised there was some sort of cat flu going about. Many cats have died. One neighbour lost 7.  And my wife's brother's cat died in the same way two days later. Mem had only been with us for 3-4 months (a local monk had given her to us rather than let the temple dogs kill her - she had been dumped at the temple), and she was a real sweety, always jumping onto my shoulders, following me around the garden at all times, always being in the centre of the action.  This was all last week. And now our other cat, Oo-long, a male, is missing and we fear he may have fallen ill on his travels.

We get very close to our cats/dog here, and then we lose them. No animal seems to live a full life over here. People put poison down, sometimes they shoot dogs. There are snakes everywhere. Drivers don't really take dogs into consideration. If a dog chases someone on a motorbike they may well be slashed my a machete. That sort of thing. And cats are always being killed by dogs.  The only positive side to a dog's life here is that they have total freedom. No dogleads. They roam at will and generally have a good, if short life.

Since being here (12 years) we've lost Oo-liang, our dog, Cheeky and Mem, two cats. And maybe Oo-long. So, we are both thinking enough is enough. The only thing is what do you do if you wake up one morning to the sound of a very young abandoned kitten in your garden? Villagers know we like animals and so we are an easy dumping ground. Us and the (dog-filled) temple.

I'll post a photo of Mem and Oo-long.

I too hope Oo-long is on an extended adventure and will be home safe and sound soon.

It's sometimes hard to understand the relationship between humans and and animals - since the extreme - billions spent on clothes for dogs by the rich  while others slash at them with machetes :faint:

I join you in your grief over the loss of healthy family members gone much too early.  Thankfully we have warm memories that keep them alive in our heats for years to come.  Your page says your location is unknown - may I ask what part of the world you find yourself in?

I've recently deleted some personal info - can't quite remember why. Anyway, I live in Thailand but am originally from the UK.

Thanks for your kind words. It is true, our cats and dog were family members, friends rather than pets. While not being religious, I do feel they are still there.

I'm sorry for your loss. I still think about my old dogs even though I have two perfectly healthy, happy, living cute little berners besides me. I fear when they go, but, just like the dogs of my past I know that I'll always hold onto their memories and still have those moments when I remember those funny memories. For me personally. I've always had dogs in my life, though there were two years where I didn't own a dog...and it was so hard..that's when I knew how dependent I was on having a dog around (during those two years I was actually walking my neighbor's husky mutt literally every day that I could and would train him too. I remember when my neighbor told me that Keeno the husky was untrainable and all I had to do was lift a finger and Keeno sat down in front of me while I talked on the phone without uttering a word towards him until I was done. It's too bad they moved and didn't keep up the training I gave him).

I know it's personal choice to choose not to have another pet...and the fear that you may forget your beloved Jaq...but with a love that deep, you'll never forget it, even when you get another. The only cruel thing that you could possibly do though is if you get another pet is to expect it to be like your past pets...but I think that you already know that...they all have different characteristics/personalities that will touch your life, and may remind you of your past pets. There will always be reminders and memories may get old, but they'll also get sweeter as well. Again, sorry for your loss

You're very kind to send such warm and understanding comments regarding my loss of Jaq.  I think some of the trauma I'm experiencing is the loss was so sudden - he was only just six and I expected many more years with him.  I have another Corgi - Jaq's brother Leo.  They could not be different in so many ways - and you're right - I do all I can to love Leo as he needs to be loved knowing he has lost a brother.  And I know what you mean about having strong relationships - re: training, etc. - with our dogs.  They yearn to please when treated with loving attention.  Thanks again for your kindness and so glad you have the love of dogs again in your life.

I'm beginning to think that to Dave

But now that the grief is being eased by the
terribly sweet memories of my boy - I'm
afraid trying to replace him will be impossible.
Something about a rock and a hard place just now -

But it's only been three months
lots of time to - reconsider.

Many thanks for your kind thoughts

I'm so sorry to hear you lost little Jaq. The pain of losing a beloved pet is no less than losing any loved one.

The Rainbow Bridge poem was new to me until recently, but I'll share it with you now:

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

***
